What We Do

Small Business Tax Planning

TaxMan Multiservices provides small business tax planning services for self-employed people of all kinds, nationwide. We work with business owners, independent contractors, freelancers, side-hustlers, and gig workers. And we love solopreneurs and sole proprietors who are planning to incorporate when the time is right. As a separate service, we also file returns for many of our clients, every tax season.

By April, your tax bill is basically set in stone. Anything that could have changed it happened last year. An independent freelancer might be able to realize that on the fly and adapt for next year; tax planning is for people who want to optimize their tax situation more intentionally than that. Most LLC owners benefit from at least some tax-planning help, and many freelancers do too.

Who We Help

Self-Employed Tax Planning for Independent Contractors, Freelancers, Gig Workers, and Side-Hustlers

The biggest thing about tax planning for freelancers and independent contractors is the quarterly estimated payment.

Nobody withholds anything from self-employment income, so you have to set it aside yourself. Then you make estimated payments on it four times a year. If you guess low, you pay interest. If you guess high, you give the government an interest-free loan.

We work out what exactly to pay each quarter, using what you've earned so far and what you've already paid.

Business Returns

Tax Planning for Small Business

A single-member LLC files the same Schedule C that a sole proprietor files. What can change things is if you choose to be taxed as an S corporation. Whether that helps depends almost entirely on your profit.

Below a certain point, S-corp status costs more in admin than it saves on taxes. We'll tell you where you're at with this, and let you know when it might make tax sense to make that election. If this conversation turns out to be more about the business than the taxes, we're happy to have a business consulting conversation.

Either way, we like to have a tax-planning review with our clients in the fall, so our clients have time to make changes before 11:59pm on December 31, while they still affect the current year.

Common Questions

Tax Planning Questions

Is tax planning different from tax preparation?

Yes. Tax preparation means doing your taxes. Filing your return. Tax planning is about changing things ahead of time to optimize your tax situation.

Who needs tax planning?

Mostly, it's people whose income changed. A growing business, a side hustle that took off, a first big contract, a year with a major decision in it. If your income is steady and simple, a good preparer may be all you need.

Can you help with quarterly estimated payments?

Yes. That's the most common reason people call for planning help.

Can you help if I have a job and a side business?

Yes. Withholding from your day job can cover some of what the side business owes, which sometimes means just adjusting your W-4 instead of making estimated payments.

Will an LLC or S corporation automatically save me money?

No. An LLC on its own changes nothing about your taxes. An S-corp election helps if you're above a certain profit level, but it costs extra if you're not.

Do you do year-round tax planning?

Yes. After we understand your business and its needs, we'll agree on how often to check in.

Do I need to live near a TaxMan office?

No. We work with clients anywhere in the country, start to finish, online.

What should I bring to a planning call?

a) This year’s income and expenses; b) The estimated quarterly payments you’ve already made this year; c) Your most recent return; d) Your questions and ideas.

Does planning guarantee a smaller bill or no penalties?

No. We can tell you what you owe and when, and what your options are. No tax firm can promise more than that.
